Let’s forget the daily routine and wake the senses up for a weekend. New tastes and new colours assure that these days will be unique and allow us to discover a less known Portuguese region. In the municipality of Moimenta da Beira, near the Leomil Mountain, some comfortable and isolated mills were carefully recovered to be used as accommodation for this programme.

A breakfast full of homemade delicacies will offer you the first contact with the flavours of the region. Afterwards we will be visiting the water mills of Ariz, where lives one of the region’s last couples of millers that still works in flour milling and livestock farming, and we will be able to go through time at a speed very different from the one we are used to. In a valley nested at the foot of the Leomil Mountain, in the municipality of Moimenta da Beira, we will find the green pastures of Senhor Augusto and Dona Arminda, divided by the small river of Cubos. The fresh and lush vegetation growing near the river contrasts with the shrubbery of the hills, giving the place an atmosphere where you want to stay and to relax. The road ends there and the electric power was left behind at the village of Ariz. The hosts greet the few arriving visitors and show them, with pride, their still working mills. The grain enters here and the flour comes out from there.

Arrival at the mills
Reception and accommodation, followed by a dinner at the mills. On the following day, after a typical breakfast, we depart to the village of Ariz.
Then, we start our walk to the water mills, by the riverside, side by side with pastures and willows.

Arrival at the water mills and visit to the place where the flour is milled and where the sound of the working millstones reminds us of the harshness of life in ancient times. Activities: mixing the dough, preparing the oven and the leavened bread, watching the milling process, interacting with the millers and helping with the preparation of the meals, picking fruit and vegetables, and placing the bread in the oven.

Picnic lunch: Stew of lamb and country rooster cooked in a pot, with boiled potatoes, vegetables and homemade bread. The authenticity of the flavours matches the bucolic atmosphere where the picnic will take place.

In the afternoon, a walk to the ancient fortified castle village to admire the landscape of the Leomil Mountain, where the hills covered of purple, yellow and white (because of the heather, broom, gorse and furze colours), suddenly give place to a landscape that looks like the moon, covered by spherical granite rocks. Return to the village of Ariz, admiring the fauna and flora of the river.
